Pilates Reformer Studio Open in Athens

The YWCO announced today that it is opening a new Pilates Reformer Studio at their current Athens location.  The studio will offer both members and nonmembers personal and group sessions on the Pilates apparatus known as the Reformer.

“Pilates is one of the fastest growing mind/body exercise techniques in the country,” said Becky Galvin, fitness director at the YWCO. The increase in popularity may be due, in part, to the many celebrities that have credited Pilates with reshaping their bodies, including the current Miss America and Faith Hill, who shows off her new Pilates-sculpted body on the December cover of SHAPE magazine.

“Our current Pilates mat classes are always been hugely popular with our members,” said Ms. Galvin.  “And we are excited to be able to offer the Athens area community this new dimension to Pilates training.  As far as we know, we are the only full service gym in Athens to be offering Reformer work.”

The Reformer is the most popular piece of Pilates equipment.  It is one of the original apparatus designed by the founder of Pilates, Joseph Pilates.  It consists of a rolling carriage inside of a wooden or metal frame.  The carriage is attached to the frame with springs that provide resistance.  Exercises are done in supine, sitting, prone, kneeling, and standing positions.

“There a literally hundreds of exercises that can be performed on the Reformer,” said Ms. Galvin.  “It develops strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance.  And the exercises can be adapted for the most deconditioned exerciser, or someone rehabilitating an injury, to the most seasoned athlete.”
